No.  No major studies or data indicate piercings are associated with STIs. This is especially true if:

  • Your piercing is well-healed.
  • You take the time to check for skin irritations, redness, and sores when you shower.
  • You practice good hygiene.

There are some things you want to be mindful of with genital piercings. Piercings that are jagged in any way are bad news. They can tear skin, and/or open a wound, becoming the pathway for bacteria or infection, including sexually transmitted infections.

Use caution when condoms are in use.  Genital jewelry can rip/damage condoms, increasing the risk of transmitting STIs and blood borne viruses.

Finally, if you are considering getting a genital piercing, make sure you are working with someone who practices the Infection Control Guidelines for piercings.

FYI -  May 16th is National Piercing Day!

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England’s Education Department carefully selects all weekly questions. All questions are actual inquiries made to PPNNE by college-aged students.
